This article details what I initially considered a fatal registry error that stopped my Windows XP machine from rebooting. Through using a web-based tool, Reimage, it was possible to reboot, analyze and repair the registry in less than thirty minutes.
I use a Windows XP machine as a web browser and some time web server when testing. The box itself runs well, doesn't have many applications installed and is isolated from the network so it runs fast and didn't appear to require an OS upgrade.
In hindsight, choosing to install some old HTML editing software from a DVD was a bad choice. In reality, I should have just gotten some free application off of the web. On starting the editor the screen immediately froze out to the notorious blue screen of death with an error stating 'Stop 0xc0000218 error message'.
The first reaction was to reboot the system. This didn't help. Some research into the error, using another machine, pointed at the registry having been altered erroneously. My assumption at this point was that the software install had overwritten some registry keys.
I had seen this fixed before (on Windows NT) by rebooting from a Windows disk then over-riding the registry with an older working copy. This failed to even get into the Windows login screen on XP.
Some forums mentioned using Reimage to analyze and fix the issue. Looking at the marketing blurb it could remedy issues with the registry along with bugs caused by viruses and missing/erroneous application files, so it seemed to the tool to use. At the very least I thought the only other option was to re-install Windows so it seemed worth a try.
The Reimage site provides a downloadable executable that the user is meant to burn onto a disk - this becomes the boot disk for the faulty machine. I rebooted the faulty machine, with the boot disk inserted, and it started first go. In this safe mode it is possible to start up the machine and open Internet Explorer for the next Reimage step - scanning the PC for faults. This took 10 minutes after which a report showed a list of issues, the main one being the registry.
At this stage, the Reimage review prompted me with the option to fix the issues. This started a process to download some files (drivers mainly from what I could see) and these were installed. The system is then rebooted. All in all, the Windows XP machine was repaired, rebooted and working again in less than 30 minutes. I un-installed the faulty application and backed up all data and the registry file once again.
On the face of it, Reimage resolved an issue that I had deemed would require reformatting and reinstalling Windows to repair. The incident has made me cautious of installing software in future, but at the very least confident that most issues, including blue screen errors, can be remedied effectively.Links:
